The idea for the Union of Workers in Contemporary Art (SEST)  originally sprung from an open Facebook group named “Cultural Workers Alliance Greece” in March 2020. The discussions taking place in that group naturally revolved around the existing problems and shortcomings in the creative and cultural sector, such as the absence of a framework of support for arts professionals, or the absence of state recognition of contemporary art related professions, which the pandemic not only highlighted but also intensified. In the face of these shortcomings, the union was conceived as a means of advocacy, of applying pressure and offering arts professionals representation before state institutions and other public or private organizations. Its formation and establishment is the outcome of the collective work of a non-hierarchical, intergenerational group of artists and curators.
